It’s less than 2 weeks until the 4th of July fireworks, but already the loud noises of firecrackers can be heard and we will most likely continue to hear them for several days following the holiday, as well.
For our animals who do not understand what is happening, these sudden noises can trigger overwhelming feelings of fright and panic. Some individuals become so fearful that they are literally outside of their own bodies. Frightened out of their wits, they are beside themselves with fear with the unfortunate results of running away, panic attacks, destructive behavior and/or injury.
Of course, we can be present physically to offer reassurance and protection and emotionally to offer a calm and safe haven. However, as many of you have already experienced this may not be enough. Here are my recommendations for additional help from our powerful ally, the flowers. Get your Big Bang Survival Kit ready now!
It is not too early to start building your animals’ confidence and courage by giving her Bach’s Flower Remedy, Mimulus. The Mimulus flower is a small, yellow blossom, commonly called “Monkey Flower” perhaps because it resembles the face of a monkey. It is native to North America and grows in the wild along brooks and streams. Dr. Bach called it “The Bravery Flower”. The healing message of Mimulus is that the spirit can find balance, trust and security in the world, diminishing the confusion of fear and anxiety.
To administer any flower essence to your animal companion, the recommended dosage is 4 drops, 4 times a day or more frequently if needed. The drops can be gently massaged into the fur, around muzzle, ears and paw pads or mixed with purified water and spritzed around the animal or her bedding. Flower essences work on a vibrational level of healing, balancing the bodies energy system; they do not necessarily need to be given orally to be effective. For daily dosing, 4 drops can be placed in the drinking water. (For more details please refer to previous postings about how to administer flower essences and how they work, or visit my website for further information.)
If it appears that your frightened animal friend is still having problems with the big noises on the holiday, itself, have Bach’s Rock Rose flower essence ready. In nature, this little yellow flower blooms from June to September, usually under other shrubs on chalky uplands, limestone and gravelly soils. Rock Rose is one of the most important components of the popular emergency essence, Rescue Remedy (the others being Impatiens, Cherry Plum, Star of Bethlehem and Clematis – all flowers which represent a natural reversal for the negative behavior patterns that arise in response to stressful situations. For example: Impatiens counteracts an exaggerated need to act immediately, Cherry Plum balances the fear of losing control, Star of Bethlehem addresses the state of shock, Clematis keeps one in the present moment and Rock Rose connects one to the qualities of courage and steadfastness.) An animal in a state of terror is unable to cope, frozen in fear. Rock Rose sends the message “I am more than my body”, “I am held in safety by a higher force”, “The energy of nature flows peacefully through me.”
Rock Rose can be applied as needed during panic attacks until there is resolution of the extreme fear. One technique I recommend is to apply a few drops (four) of the essence to the palms of your hands and place one hand over your animal’s solar plexus (approximately at the base of the sternum, or breast bone) and the other hand on the space between the shoulder blades (on the back just below the base of her neck). Embrace her lightly this way for as long as she will allow. In addition you can use any or all of the other techniques for administering a flower essence.
Remember, our companion animals easily absorb and reflect our own emotions, so it is important that we remain calm role models for them. If you are feeling anxious for your loved one, you might take the above recommended essences as well or use Rescue Remedy for yourself. You can apply the essences to pulse points on your body (inside wrists or along the sides of your neck) or place four drops under your tongue for a minute or so.
Flower essences are a safe and natural remedy with no known negative side-effects and can be taken along with other medications. If your animal has a known sensitivity to alcohol, please note that the remedies are bottled in 27% proof brandy. If he or she is taking a medication for which there is a contraindication for alcohol, the flower essence can be administered externally or you can obtain Bach’s alcohol-free remedies for pets.
Bach Flower Remedies can be found at health food stores and holistic pet stores and some pharmacies or on-line at www.bachflower.com.
I will also be doing free Meridian Therapy (aka Tapping) for the animals on July 4th. This is my gift to you and the animals.
If you would like more information about Tapping or would like to include your animal friend in my sessions, please contact me through my website. I will need only your animal’s name, species and a brief description of her/his physical appearance, personality and emotional attitude. Your information will be held strictly confidential. These sessions are done over the distance; you and your animal do not need to be present to receive the benefits of this therapy.
Yours for the animals,
Noodlenose
